As we approach the weekend, residents should prepare for potential strong storms and significant rainfall.
This change in weather comes after an unusually hot and dry stretch that has left much of the region craving moisture.
Here’s what to expect for the upcoming days.
Warmer Temperatures Mid-Week
The rest of this week will be characterized by warmer-than-usual temperatures. While mornings are typically cooler at this time of year, Wednesday will start off with lows around 70 degrees, a full 20 degrees higher than the seasonal average.
Throughout the day, temperatures will climb into the upper 80s, but due to the added humidity, it will feel like the low 90s.
The day will remain mostly sunny, with only a light breeze of 5-10 miles per hour. However, there is a slight chance for isolated showers in the afternoon, particularly in the northwest parts of Missouri.
By Thursday, the heat will ramp up even more, with temperatures peaking in the low 90s. With the humidity, it could feel as hot as the upper 90s, making for a sweltering day.
Again, there may be a few isolated morning showers, and a thunderstorm or two in the afternoon. While most storms will be mild, a few could turn severe, bringing hail and strong winds, especially along the I-70 corridor.
Despite these risks, widespread severe weather is not expected.
Friday Brings More Warmth, But Changes are Coming
Friday’s forecast mirrors Thursday’s, with highs around 90 degrees. Once again, it will feel warmer due to the humidity, making it seem more like the mid-90s.
A few more isolated storms could pop up during the day, but for the majority of us, conditions will remain dry and warm.
A Wet and Stormy Weekend Ahead
As we head into the weekend, the weather will take a dramatic turn. A storm system moving in from the Rockies will bring widespread rain starting on Saturday.
Early projections indicate that while rain may be on and off throughout the day, it’s not expected to be a complete washout. However, by Saturday evening, more substantial rainfall is expected, and this could carry on into Sunday morning.
With this system, we could see anywhere from 1 to 3 inches of rain across much of the region.
This would be a much-needed soaking for the area, as we’ve experienced a dry spell since mid-August, with very little rain in September so far.
Cooler Temperatures to Follow the Rain
After the weekend rain, temperatures will begin to cool down significantly. By Sunday afternoon, we should expect scattered showers and a break from the heat.
Cooler fall-like temperatures will settle in as highs only reach the mid to upper 70s, offering a refreshing change just in time for the official start of fall next week.
