In 2025, competitive congressional, state, and local elections will take place in a few locations, while the majority of the United States holds its major primary and general elections in even-numbered years.

The following races will be covered by The Associated Press this year:

January

January 7: A special general election is held in Virginia to fill the state Senate District and state House District 26 legislative seats. National Democrats have focused on both seats, which became available when their current holders won congressional elections.

February

February 18: Wisconsin has primary elections for the position of Superintendent of Public Instruction and a seat on the state Supreme Court.

April

Two special elections for U.S. House seats are held in Florida on April 1. Due to the retirement of former Representative Matt Gaetz, who was nominated by President-elect Donald Trump as attorney general but then withdrew, the 1st District, which is thought to be a solid Republican seat, is now empty. Following his appointment by Trump as national security adviser, former Representative Mike Waltz resigned from the 6th District.

Wisconsin also holds general elections for the position of Superintendent of Public Instruction and a seat on the state Supreme Court on April 1.

May

May 20: Primary elections are held in Pennsylvania for the Superior Court, the state Supreme Court, the Pittsburgh mayoral race, and Philadelphia municipal elections.

June

June 10: New Jersey’s legislative and gubernatorial primary elections are held. In consideration of the Jewish festival of Shavuot, which fell on the scheduled election date, Governor Phil Murphy signed a measure on Tuesday that rescheduled the state’s primary from June 3 to June 10.
