NEW YORK (AP) According to the FBI, the man who killed 14 people on New Year’s Day in New Orleans by driving a vehicle into a crowd had earlier surveyed the French Quarter and taken footage with his Meta smart glasses.

According to Lyonel Myrthil, the FBI special agent in charge of the New Orleans field office, Shamsud-Din Jabbar used the glasses to shoot video when he was riding a bicycle around the French Quarter on October 31 while he was planning the attack. During the incident, Jabbar also donned the livestreaming glasses, but he did not turn them on.

A representative for Facebook’s parent company, Meta, chose not to comment.

What the glasses can do is as follows:

What are Meta glasses?

Made in collaboration with Ray-Ban, Meta glasses are frames that have speakers, a built-in camera, and artificial intelligence that can be operated with buttons, voice commands, and basic gestures. The device must be able to connect to the internet or be paired with a phone in order to do certain tasks, like playing music or communicating with Meta’s AI assistant.

Unlike other previous industry attempts to create augmented-reality smart glasses, the wearable does not have a display integrated into the lens. But according to Meta, it is developing a set of glasses that will provide consumers with a completely holographic experience.

What the glasses can do

The ability to take pictures and videos with the inbuilt camera and post the results to Facebook or Instagram is one of the glasses’ primary selling factors. Additionally, you can livestream, but only to social media sites that are compatible with Meta.

Additionally, you may message individuals, listen to music, and make audio and video chats with the glasses.

The camera also enables Meta’s AI assistant to see what you’re looking at, which enables it to answer basic queries like finding the closest landmark to your position and translate text into different languages that can be spoken back to you or displayed on an associated phone app. Since the glasses are primarily hands-free, you will be speaking to your device and it will respond.

What the glasses can t do

At the moment, the glasses are unable to carry out sophisticated functions that other digital assistants might be able to, such as making restaurant reservations or providing turn-by-turn directions as you’re moving. Additionally, the lens lacks a display, thus there is no viewfinder for taking pictures or recording videos.

Additionally, the device has built-in visual indicators that let onlookers know when you’re taking pictures or videos. While using the camera, this LED privacy indicator remains active. Meta claims that in order to act more covertly, you cannot turn off this light.
