The Big Ten championship game on Saturday will feature one of the highest-ranked matches of the college football season as Penn State rose in the College Football Playoff rankings.
Days before the Nittany Lions play Oregon in Indianapolis, Penn State shot up to No. 3 in the CFP selection committee’s most recent rankings, which were made public Tuesday night.
As the only FBS team with an unbeaten record at the end of the regular season, the Ducks held onto their top ranking. The Nittany Lions will face their second top-five opponent of the season in the Big Ten title game. Last month, Ohio State, ranked fourth at the time, defeated Penn State.

Because of Ohio State’s shocking defeat by Michigan, Penn State advanced to the Big Ten championship game first. The Buckeyes fell from fourth place to sixth place.

With a No. 11 ranking, Alabama gave the 9-3 Crimson Tide a strong chance to advance. Miami entered at No. 12 after losing unexpectedly at Syracuse and falling to 10-2.
Penn State is currently ranked as the fifth seed in the CFP. In that case, the Nittany Lions would play Arizona State, the 12th seed, at Beaver Stadium in the opening round.
The Nittany Lions’ CFP seeding, though, might alter. Penn State will guarantee themselves a first-round bye if they defeat Oregon this weekend. They might fall one or two spots lower in the rankings if they lose to the Ducks at Lucas Oil Stadium.
