Subterranean utility work is planned for this weekend at the junction of Cameron Street and Sycamore Street in the City of Harrisburg, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).
According to a press release, this work is part of the first of two contracts for East Shore Section 3 of the broader I-83 Capital Beltway Project.
Subterranean utility work is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. on Friday, February 7, weather permitting. By the afternoon or early evening of Saturday, February 8, this job should be finished.
Both Sycamore and Cameron streets will have traffic limitations. Traffic control will be provided by flaggers. Drivers ought to look for other routes.
To allow the contractor to build drainage in the area, a lane restriction is now in place on Cameron Street between Paxton and Sycamore streets in the eastbound direction. This side of the road has a closed sidewalk. According to the statement, there are signs at Paxton and Sycamore streets warning people to use the sidewalk on the other side of the street.
Long-term construction signs are currently visible along northbound I-83 between the Eisenhower Interchange and the I-83 John Harris Memorial (South) Bridge. The contractor is clearing behind the barrier and doing utilities work from Cameron Street northward through the project boundaries.
Widening and rebuilding sections of the I-83 highway, building overhead bridges at 29th and 19th streets, building the new Cameron Street interchange, tearing down the 13th Street interchange, and enhancing the roads along the Cameron Street, 19th Street, and 29th Street corridors are all included in this contract.
Throughout the project’s duration, traffic may be significantly impacted by lane limits, traffic shifts, and road closures or detours. Any significant traffic consequences will be announced in advance.
The contractor for this $154.6 million project is New Enterprise Stone and Lime Company, Inc., located in New Enterprise, Pennsylvania.
It is anticipated that all work on this contract will be finished by October 12, 2027.
The building of the 13th Street bridge and approaches, the widening of 17th Street, the reconstruction and widening of I-83, and the construction of the 17th Street interchange are all included in the second East Shore Section 3 contract, which is anticipated to be underway from 2025 to 2028.
