At 10:59 p.m. on Friday, the National Weather Service upgraded its forecast for lake effect snow in Northern Erie, Southern Erie, and Crawford County through Saturday at 1 a.m.

Radar detected a strong lake effect snow band at 10:54 p.m. along a line that ran from northeast to Geneva to Mentor. This strong snow belt caused by the lake effect was almost motionless. Parts of eastern Lake, northern Ashtabula, and northern and central Erie counties are currently almost impassable. In Erie County, significant portions of I-90 and I-86 are closed. A state of emergency has been imposed in Erie County as a result of the lake effect snow storm. Road crews will not be able to keep up with the snowfall in northern Ashtabula County and eastern Lake County, which is now seeing the highest snow rates. The weather service advises against driving in these locations unless absolutely necessary.

The following locations are affected by the alert: Mentor, Willoughby, Eastlake, Edinboro, Geneva, North East, Madison, Girard, North Kingsville, Perry, Waterford, Albion, Timberlake, Ashtabula, Willowick, Conneaut, Fairport Harbor, Geneva-On-The-Lake, Erie, and Painesville. Traveling through this snow band should only be done in extreme cases. Emergency services might not be able to reach you if you become trapped, which is a serious risk. Make sure your car has an emergency kit, food and water, and a full tank of gas if you have to go.

United Robots offers a service called Advance Local Weather Alerts that gathers the most recent information from the National Weather Service using machine learning.
