At 9:34 p.m. on Friday, the National Weather Service released an updated forecast for lake effect snow in Northern Erie, Southern Erie, and Crawford County through 11 p.m.
Radar detected a strong lake effect snow band at 9:31 p.m. along a line that ran from Ashtabula to Mentor and the near northeast. This strong snow belt caused by the lake effect was almost motionless. Parts of northern Ashtabula County, northern and central Erie County, and Lake County are almost impassable. The weather service reports that large portions of I-90 and I-86 are closed in Erie County.
The following locations are affected by the alert: Mentor, Willoughby, Eastlake, Edinboro, Geneva, North East, Madison, Girard, North Kingsville, Perry, Waterford, Albion, Ashtabula, Ashtabula, Willowick, Conneaut, Chardon, Fairport Harbor, Geneva-On-The-Lake, and Erie. Traveling through this snow band should only be done in extreme cases. Make sure your car has an emergency kit, food and water, and a full tank of gas if you have to go.
