At 5:07 a.m. on Thursday, the National Weather Service issued an updated forecast for Blair and Huntingdon counties that called for heavy snow through 6 a.m.
The meteorological service reported that “a band of heavy snow was over Hollidaysburg and Altoona at 5:05 a.m., moving east at 15 MPH.”
The following locations are affected by the alert: Royer, Canoe Creek State Park, McConnellstown, East Freedom, Mapleton, Tunnelhill, McVeytown, Mill Creek, Kistler, Huntingdon, Hollidaysburg, Roaring Spring, Mount Union, Lakemont, Williamsburg, Duncansville, Allensville, Raystown Dam, Horseshoe Curve, and Raystown Dam. Interstate 99 from mile markers 20 to 34 is included in this.
“In winter weather conditions, conditions can rapidly deteriorate,” the weather service continues. Be ready for roads covered with ice or snow. Reduce your speed and give yourself more time to get there. If you have to drive through or into this area of deep snow, proceed with additional caution. Accidents may result from abrupt changes in visibility and perhaps slick roads.
United Robots offers a service called Advance Local Weather Alerts that gathers the most recent information from the National Weather Service using machine learning.
