WASHINGTON: The incoming presidentKari Lake, a former television host who lost her bids for governor and the Senate in Arizona, has been appointed by Donald Trump to be Voice of America’s next director.

Our new head of the US Agency for Global Media, whom I will soon name, will appoint her and collaborate closely with her. On Wednesday evening, Trump made a post on his Truth Social platform.

In November, Lake, a staunch supporter of Trump who not only endorsed his untrue predictions about losing the 2020 election but also repeated them after losing the governor’s race in Arizona that year, lost her attempt for a Senate seat to Democrat Representative Ruben Gallego.

Voice of America, which started airing during World War II, offers readers and viewers worldwide news in over 40 languages. Michael Abramowitz, its current director, has only been there since June.

Trump appointed media executive Michael Pack, who was connected to former Trump strategist Steve Bannon, to head VOA’s parent organization, the US Agency for Global Media, in 2020. A federal appeals court stopped Pack from firing the leaders of four journalistic outlets, including Radio Free Europe.

Hours after President Joe Biden took office, he resigned.

Trump also announced Wednesday night that he had appointed Leandro Rizzuto, who served as the consul general of Bermuda during his first term, as ambassador to the Organization of American States and Peter Lamelas, a doctor and the founder of an urgent care center, as ambassador to Argentina.
