The Vikings lost the NFC North Division and dropped to No. 5 for a road game on Wild Card weekend after losing to the Detroit Lions in Week 18, which had given them a chance to capture the NFC’s top seed. After finishing the regular season with a 14-3 record and nine consecutive victories before last weekend’s 31-9 setback in Detroit, they are favored by one point against the Rams. Even though the Vikings have everything they need to contend, only three of their 14 wins this season have come against postseason opponents, and they have suffered three losses, including a 30–20 setback to the Rams in Week 8.
Before resting players in a Week 18 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks (30-25), the Rams recovered from an injury-plagued start to the season and finished strong with five consecutive victories. A 44-42 shootout victory over the Buffalo Bills, which was propelled by two touchdown runs from Kyren Williams and a strong day from the receiving tandem of Puka Nacua (12-162-1) and Cooper Kupp (5-92-1), was the high point of that stretch and their entire season. The key to LA’s victory over Minnesota is the same group of playmakers centered around quarterback Matthew Stafford.
