CINCINNATI — Cornerback, Pittsburgh SteelersDuring Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Joey Porter Jr. was given six total penalties. The fact that only four were accepted is astounding. That is remains the most penalties a defensive back has been penalized for in a game this season.
Porter has had three or more penalties in a game for the second time in four weeks. He has two of these games this season, making him the only NFL cornerback to do so.
Following the game, Porter expressed his displeasure with the NFL’s whistle, which he has been receiving for the past month.
I’m upset about it. Those flags kind of get in the way of my ultimate goal of being great. However, as Coach Mike Tomlin frequently states, I must continue playing and performing my duties as long as he is not tripping and my team is not upset about it. They seem to be attempting to change my play right now, but I’m not too concerned about that.”
After the game, head coach Mike Tomlin did seem to be having a lot of trouble with it. Porter was instructed to lessen the impact of Tee Higgins, a large, strong receiver. Tomlin believed Porter matched Higgins’ intensity, and he wanted to do the same.
“Dude, Tee Higgins is mostly responsible for it. Tee is a decent one. He is. Regarding the calls, Tomlin stated, “You can’t allow him to beat you up while the officials are going to call it the way they’re going to call it.” I therefore occasionally sort of absorb some of that. A large guy like that cannot be allowed to bash you up. The fire must be matched with the fire. It is your aim that you execute it cleanly enough to avoid receiving a lot of fines. In that sense, we didn’t succeed today. We will continue to work, but we will not allow that man to take advantage of us.
Porter has struggled with penalties ever since he attended Penn State. Porter’s length and playing style may have contributed to the Steelers’ task to help him overcome those inclinations.
Teryl Austin, the defensive coach, frequently talks about trusting his technique instead than grabbing men out of habit. Porter want to get better at it during the season.
