As the season progressed into the Pittsburgh Steelers’ most difficult stretch of the year, Russell Wilson’s performance declined precipitously, and the club ended up losing five straight games. Wilson and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith were reportedly not on the same page, despite Smith’s best efforts to give the Steelers the best chance.
Smith and Wilson worked out their problems, according to Steelers insider Mark Kaboly, but their relationship was tumultuous and did not always lean toward the positive.
“During the season, there were rumors that Fields was chosen over Wilson by offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, but those rumors were never confirmed. Nevertheless, a team source recently stated that Wilson and Smith did not have a very good working relationship but worked through their differences as best they could, Kaboly wrote, even though they spent many hours together watching movies and making public jokes about it after the usual workday.
While Smith is anticipated to return as long as he is hired as a head coach, Wilson says he hopes to return to Pittsburgh. Smith is scheduled to speak with the Chicago Bears and New York Jets.
Their success or failure in 2025 will be greatly influenced by how they handle this connection if they both end up returning.
