Beej Chaney, a Minnesota punk rock star, passed away.

According to reports, Chaney, 68, who was a member of the band The Suburbs, was discovered on January 5 after swimming in the Pacific Ocean.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Chaney would go out at sundown to swim in the ocean as part of his regular habit. Later that evening, his body was reportedly discovered on Hermosa Beach by friends and bandmates.

According to the newspaper, after Chaney’s body washed up, the Hermosa Beach Police Department reported that crews responded to a complaint at approximately 7 p.m. It was determined that he died accidentally. Chaney escaped a near-death encounter during a swim last year, according to The Suburbs drummer Hugo Klaers, who informed the publication. He claimed that the musician passed out on the beach at that time.

Klaer informed the newspaper that his body temperature had decreased to about 75 degrees. The doctor referred to him as her “little miracle” since, according to her, most people do not survive when their body temperature drops this low, but he did come back after three days of being placed in an induced coma. He was only wearing swim trunks when he was swimming in the ocean, so they informed him he couldn’t swim for a month and that he would have to wear a wet suit going forward.

Chaney played with The Suburbs until 2014 and was a founding member of the band in 1977.
