In an interview with Rob King of Steelers.com on Monday, team president Art Rooney II stated that the Pittsburgh Steelers are not anticipated to replace any of its three coordinators. In spite of the team’s overall decline, defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, who had long been doubtful about returning, is expected to serve as the team’s defensive coordinator for another season.
Although Mike (Tomlin) is still assessing the staff, I believe the majority of the coaching staff will remain in their current positions. I believe our coordinators will remain in their positions. I am excited to have Arthur Smith back for a second year so he can have more time to truly establish his method. According to Rooney, there is work to be done, but generally speaking, I believe we have the right people in the appropriate places to do it.
Despite adding talent to the linebacker and secondary rooms, the Steelers’ defense deteriorated in numerous areas compared to the previous season. Overall, the club must start over on that side of the football field in order to discover their identity after they were expected to improve from being a mediocre squad a year ago to an outstanding one. It seems sense to move on from Austin, but Mike Tomlin, who is a defensive head coach, will also need to adjust.
