Pro Football Network listed Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Preston Smith as a possible cut candidate. Smith, the team’s fourth edge rusher, was a healthy scratch who missed two games after the team acquired him from the Green Bay Packers with a seventh-round pick.
However, Smith has a huge deal that will probably put him on the outside looking in for a 2025 comeback. The Steelers may free up a lot of space by cutting him, as his salary are set for $13.4 and 14.1 million for the following two seasons. Since neither of the two years is assured, they would not have to pay dead money.
Smith hasn’t had fewer than eight sacks since 2020, and he had eight in 2023. He is a productive player at the age of thirty-one. He will probably test the market and have suitors to acquire him after a release, but the Steelers have depth at edge rusher, and they may try to get him back on a less expensive contract.
