In an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday, quarterback Russell Wilson stated that the Pittsburgh Steelers had begun contract negotiations with him. Wilson indicated that these were only first discussions, which does not reveal much about his future with the organization. However, it appears that the Steelers are at least considering the potential cost of keeping Wilson.
“Yes,” Wilson responded, “we have begun to speak a little bit, of course, and we had our meetings and everything else and were just starting into it.
Wilson stated that he still intends to rejoin the Steelers and that he hopes to retire with them.
Wilson remarked, “Man, I have so much more in me. Naturally, I’m thrilled because I want to spend a lot of time and, ideally, my entire career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. For me, Pittsburgh holds a special spot. I want to be able to play there for a long time because I adore it.
Wilson’s statistics appear to be excellent, but he had a lot of trouble in his previous five games. The Steelers wanted to extend Wilson, but it appears that the future is more focused on Justin Fields coming back and starting in 2025 than it is on paying a large contract to a 36-year-old Wilson who had a rough finish.
If it does, Wilson and the Steelers will need to work out a compromise on the contract. Wilson or Fields will most likely be the Steelers’ 2025 selection, but it’s still unclear which one will be selected.
