According to several sources, the New York Jets have asked Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith to interview for the head coaching vacancy. Smith is supposed to have several interviews following his first season with the organization, but this is his first interview of the cycle.

With Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, Smith’s offense got off to a great start, but they have since faltered and are now in the bottom ten in most metrics. Although Smith will receive recognition for some of his efforts, the Steelers offense has fallen far short of expectations.

Since the Jets sacked head coach Robert Saleh, the position has remained vacant for months. Along with Smith, they have previously spoken with or asked to speak with Mike Vrabel, Ron Rivera, and Bobby Slowik.

After three seasons, Smith was fired by the Atlanta Falcons, but the Steelers have helped him improve his standing in the league. Therefore, it is not shocking that the Jets are interested in Smith. Smith does wish to return to coaching, but it is unclear if he will do so in New York or another city.

Smith declined the offer of the head coaching position at his alma institution, North Carolina, stating that he was not a suitable choice. Insiders, however, think Smith will be a strong contender for head coach this cycle.

After reviving Ryan Tannehill’s career in Tennessee as an offensive coordinator and using Derrick Henry and A.J. Brown as the cornerstones of his offense, he got his first head coaching position.
