Pittsburgh –Mason McCormick, who suffered a broken left hand against the Cincinnati Bengals, will start for the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Baltimore Ravens.

McCormick discussed the injury on Tuesday, claiming it had already gotten better. But when he practices to see if he can play, it will be about utility. The Steelers will turn to Spencer Anderson if he lacks grip strength.

“I am very hopeful,” McCormick declared. Already, it feels much better.

Instead of wearing a cast, McCormick will play with a highly taped brace, thus making his hand worthless. A cast is not an option because he must hold and manipulate whomever he would line up against.

According to McCormick, he understood what had happened right away because he heard a pop when the incident happened on the field. However, he hopes that won’t prevent him from playing. He will play if he is capable of it. McCormick’s performance in practice will decide whether or not he starts for the Steelers.

“To be honest,” McCormick responded, “I don’t know.” This coming week, I will practice. I will assess my capabilities and limitations, and we will proceed accordingly.

Since Week 5, when James Daniels tore his Achilles tendon against the Indianapolis Colts, McCormick has been the starting right guard. He has performed admirably thus far and appears to be an NFL starter. However, the hand injury might prevent him from playing in the season’s most important game.
