Pittsburgh –The Pittsburgh Steelers’ run defense suffered a serious setback on Sunday when they were without their star safety, DeShon Elliott, against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Steelers’ third-year player, Damontae Kazee, made the starting lineup. The Steelers will, however, have an additional safety option that may not be on the roster as a real safety.
Following their training camp, Cam Sutton played safety in the team’s three safety packages with Elliott out. Since his return, Sutton has also played slot, dimebacker, and safety.
Sutton could spend a lot of time back there, Kazee suggested. Given that it’s a whole different perspective from slot cornerback or even dimebacker, Sutton is growing accustomed to playing on the back end in that configuration.
“The most important thing is to communicate more,” Sutton stated. You can either play man up or use one word to talk to another guy in the nickel or outside. The greatest difference is having those calls and getting them down because you have whole play calls back there.
Over the past few weeks, the Steelers have been attempting to balance the employment of Sutton and Beanie Bishop as slot cornerbacks. However, given Elliott’s injury, if he continues to miss games, the team will probably play Sutton more at safety than in the slot.
