Russell Wilson, a quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is one of two quarterbacks who will be available for free this offseason. Wilson expects to return as the starting quarterback for the Steelers after declaring during the Pro Bowl on Saturday that he was solely focused on the team.
Prior to Saturday’s AFC Pro Bowl practice, Wilson told The Associated Press, “I’m looking forward to hopefully returning to the Steelers and we’ll see what happens with the rest.” I adore Pittsburgh. It goes without saying that Pete will be an excellent coach. He excels in his field. However, my attention is on the Steelers.
But how much would it take the Steelers to bring him back? Gerry Dulac claims that the Steelers would be content to re-sign Wilson to a deal of $20–25 million year, but Wilson may have higher expectations and would have to look elsewhere if he did.
Wilson finished 6-6 in 12 starts, throwing for 2482 yards, 16 touchdowns, and only five interceptions. The only obstacle is that Wilson and Arthur Smith, the offensive coordinator, might not agree. Wilson and Smith were at odds after Wilson was denied the chance to switch plays at the line of scrimmage, according to Dulac.
Several reports claim that Smith did not want Wilson to stray from the game plan and alter plays at the line of scrimmage, as he did in Cincinnati. Smith’s run-first approach and Wilson’s desire to attack with the pass and throw down the field caused conceptual friction, according to Dulac.
Wilson, 36, is a former Super Bowl champion and ten-time Pro Bowl player. Following the release of all the leaks, Rooney stated that the Steelers and Wilson will soon start speaking with Fields’ and Wilson’s representatives.
