Four weeks after missing practice due to a groin injury late in the week before the team’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles, offensive tackle Calvin Anderson of the Pittsburgh Steelers made his comeback on Tuesday. Anderson is eligible to return off injured reserve because he has missed the last four games.
At this time of year, the Steelers acquire two places for players returning from injured reserve. While one of those positions is probably designated for Troy Fautanu, Anderson will use the other for the playoffs. After tearing a ligament associated with the injury, Fautanu sustained a dislocated kneecap and needed surgery to treat it.
Fautanu has been putting in a lot of training, so it is not a certain that he will miss the season, even though the playoffs are near the beginning of his schedule.
With just two genuine tackles on the roster at the moment, Anderson served as the team’s swing tackle. Given that rookie Mason McCormick is dealing with a broken left hand, he might be activated to join the team, particularly if Spencer Anderson starts at guard.
However, the Steelers will consider Anderson as a backup at tackle and a possible starter at right guard until additional information regarding McCormick’s condition is available.
