Following their agreement with Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, the Chicago Bears will not be hiring Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith as their next head coach. Johnson will aim to move the Bears up from last in the NFC North with quarterback Caleb Williams.
Smith will continue to work for the Steelers in the interim. He had interviews with the New York Jets and the Bears for head coaching jobs. Smith might yet be hired by the Jets.
With two different quarterbacks, Smith did contribute to the Steelers offense’s improvement in certain areas, which has improved his standing in the NFL. It follows Smith’s dismissal following three failed seasons in Atlanta. After finishing 7-10 in his final season with the Falcons, he had three straight losing seasons.
Smith’s tenure as the Tennessee Titans’ offensive coordinator continues to be his most fruitful NFL investment. The Titans’ offensive success with Derrick Henry and A.J. Brown made Smith a desirable head coach candidate during that time.
