Miami (AP)On Sunday, the Phillies announced that they had acquired left-hander Jes s. Luzardo from the Miami Marlins.
Two prospects, infielder Starlyn Caba and outfielder Emaarion Boyd, were sent to Miami.
Paul McIntosh, a catcher, was also acquired by Philadelphia.
After battling a number of injuries over his career, Luzardo finished 2024 with a 5.00 ERA in 12 starts for Miami before his season was cut short by a lumbar stress response. Luzardo made 32 starts and finished 10-10 with a 3.58 ERA in 2023, the year the Marlins qualified for the playoffs. That year, his strikeout percentage was 30% with 208 strikeouts.
The Phillies already have a formidable rotation that includes Cristopher S. Sanchez, Ranger Su rez, Aaron Nola, and Zack Wheeler. Luzardo is joining them.
As part of their most recent rebuilding effort, the Marlins have been trading veterans for prospects for the past few months.
During the season, players with big league salaries, such as standout outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. and three-time hitting champion Luis Arraez, were traded away.
From 2023 to 2024, Caba, 19, participated in 116 minor league games at three different levels for the Phillies. Boyd, 21, played in 198 games in Philadelphia’s minor league system after being initially taken by the Phillies in the 11th round of the 2022 draft.
The Phillies designated left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert for assignment in order to create space on the 40-man roster for Luzardo.
