ANNAPOLIS, MD (AP) Longtime Navy athletics radio host Pete Medhurst passed away. He was fifty-five.
On social media on Tuesday, the Navy athletic department revealed Medhurst’s passing after speaking with his family. In late October, the Capital Gazette announced that Medhurst was undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumor.
Medhurst has been with the Navy Radio Network since 1997, where he has aired football, basketball, lacrosse, baseball, volleyball, swimming, and wrestling. He has been the voice of Navy football for the last 12 years. For twenty-four years, he served as the voice of Navy lacrosse.
The athletic department tweeted, “Rest in peace to a Navy legend.” He was a wonderful husband, father, friend, and broadcaster. During his 28 years with Navy Athletics, he had a profound impact on the lives of numerous midshipmen.
Born in Anne Arundel County, Medhurst previously worked as a lacrosse analyst for ESPNU and the Big Ten Network and as a football play-by-play analyst for HDNet and CBS Sports Network. He did a good job of filling in on Washington Nationals radio broadcasts.
According to the Nationals, Pete was always there to provide a smile and a good word. His voice during Nationals broadcasts and his presence around the ballpark will be much missed.
