In what looks to be a busy awards season, Tyler Warren, the tight end for Penn State and Heisman Trophy candidate, has won his first piece of silverware.
The Kwalick-Clark Tight End of the Year award, which goes to the top tight end in the Big Ten, was naturally handed to Warren. On Tuesday, the conference revealed its individual honors.
Warren was not named the Big Ten’s Graham-George Offensive Player of the Year. Dillon Gabriel, the quarterback for Oregon, received that accolade.
Warren has had a fantastic season, leading Penn State to the Big Ten title game and a berth in the College Football Playoffs while breaking Penn State and Big Ten records every week. He is ranked second in the conference with 81 catches and third with 978 yards.
Warren joins Pat Freiermuth (2020) as the second Nittany Lion to win the Kwalick-Clark. The award, which was first given out in 2011, is named for Iowa’s Dallas Clark and Penn State’s Ted Kwalick.
Warren is eligible for a few extra honors after being selected to the first team of the All-Big Ten. Warren is a finalist for the Paul Hornung Award, which is given to the most versatile player in college football, and the John Mackey Award, which is given to the best tight end in the sport.
Warren, a finalist, should be regarded as the favorite to win the Mackey, along with Harold Fannin Jr. of Bowling Green and Colston Loveland of Michigan. With Colorado two-way sensation Travis Hunter, the Heisman favorite, also a finalist, Warren is unlikely to win the Hornung.
Speaking of the Heisman, Penn State has worked hard to secure enough votes for Warren to receive an invitation to the New York City Heisman Trophy ceremony. In a season without a clear-cut top quarterback, he has undoubtedly done enough to get consideration.
Warren has been positioned at quarterback, tight end, receiver, and more. Warren has ran for 189 yards and four touchdowns in addition to his six receiving touchdowns. Warren has been the offensive center and a major contributor to Penn State’s run to the Big Ten title.
When the Nittany Lions play Oregon at Lucas Oil Stadium, Warren will need to perform at his peak once more. CBS will broadcast the game, which is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. on Saturday.
