A former highly-touted recruit and tight end for Penn State is logging onto the transfer portal.

According to a report from on3, Jerry Cross, a tight end in his third season with the Nittany Lions, intends to use the transfer site.

Next Monday, December 9, marks the start of the winter transfer portal window, which ends on December 28.

Cross, a four-star player by consensus, signed with Penn State in its 2022 recruiting class. Among other places, Michigan, Michigan State, and Wisconsin extended offers to the Milwaukee native.

Cross didn’t play much for the Nittany Lions. He played in just three games this season, made five appearances last fall, and redshirted as a true freshman in 2022. Over the past two years, Cross has played 32 offensive snaps without recording a reception.

Cross was not anticipated to have a significant impact in 2025.The departure of Heisman Trophy candidate Tyler Warren will allow five-star true freshman Luke Reynolds to establish himself. Andrew Rappleyea, a former four-star who was anticipated to be a major contributor this fall, will be recovering from a chronic injury sustained in September. Khalil Dinkins, a veteran, is still eligible.

Cross won’t be the last Penn State player to use the portal to search for other opportunities to play. As the Nittany Lions prepare for the College Football Playoff and the Big Ten championship game, expect more roster attrition in the days and weeks ahead.
