Drew Allaris is anticipated to forego the 2025 NFL draft and return to Penn State for the upcoming season. The Nittany Lions’ starting quarterback, Allar, told James Franklin and the coaching staff Monday morning that he plans to return to Happy Valley for his senior year.

Pete Thamel of ESPN reported the news first, and Allar then made a statement on social media. Following backup quarterback Beau Pribula’s choice to use the transfer portal before to the College Football Playoffs on Sunday night, the quarterback made his declaration.

Days before Penn State’s College Football Playoff matchup with SMU, Allar conducted a prearranged press conference on Monday, an hour after making his announcement.

Naturally, the first thing people asked Allar was why he chose to return in 2025.

“It was a football decision for me personally,” Allar stated. I’ve always done things that way. My family and I discussed it in great detail and considered all the options. In my own case, I concluded that it was best for my future circumstances. Since I’m completely focused on SMU, I’m actually pleased I got this out of the way. I don’t want to discuss it any more, with all due respect. However, it was a football and personal choice that I believed was best for me.

Allar subsequently stated that he discussed his imminent decision to not declare for the 2025 NFL draft with his family, his agent, James Franklin, and Penn State’s staff.

According to Allar, no party was excluded. Once more, I have only been thinking about our impending opponents throughout the past few weeks. It’s SMU this week. However, given the NCAA football schedule, making decisions at this point in the season is kind of crazy. But because SMU is such a talented team, I’m completely focused on them. I’m excited for our upcoming opportunity to play in Beaver once more on Saturday.

Over the past two seasons, Allar has a 21-5 record as Penn State’s starting quarterback. Under play-caller Andy Kotelnicki, the former five-star prospect has emerged as one of college football’s top passers this season. After being considered for head coaching positions, including the West Virginia position, Kotelnicki declared that he will return to his role as Penn State’s play-caller.

Under the guidance of Kotelnicki and quarterbacks coach Danny O. Brien, Allar has flourished. He has thrown for seven interceptions, 21 touchdowns, and 2,894 yards. Allar is ranking seventh in the FBS with an average of 8.9 yards per passing attempt. Allar’s yards per attempt (6.8) was 77th in the country last season.

Allar has the option to go for the NFL draft given his leap in play. He may have been considered for the first selection, and the 2025 quarterback class is far from stacked.

However, based on Monday’s revelation, Allar seems to be a 2026 NFL candidate.
