The most dangerous cities in the US have been identified by a recent analysis based on FBI crime data.
And Pennsylvania is home to one of them.
Out of 25 cities, Philadelphia comes in at number 17 overall, according to US News & World Report.According to the analysis, both the violent and property crime rates in the City of Brotherly Love exceeded the national average in 2022. The most recent year for which crime statistics were available was that one.
Indeed, shootings and other violent acts have been a major problem for Philadelphia’s crime rate for years. Recent statistics, however, indicate a minor decrease: According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, gun violence decreased in 2024, and NBC 10 reported that last year’s homicide rate was the lowest the city had seen in ten years.
However, U.S. News & World Report analyzed more than just crime statistics to identify these cities:The methodology portion of the report describes how variables including the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) National Risk Index, air quality, and the quality and availability of healthcare were also used to determine the final rankings.
Thus, Detroit, Michigan, came in third; St. Louis, Missouri, came in second; and Memphis, Tennessee, came in first place as the nation’s three most dangerous cities.
The only city in the Keystone State to be listed by U.S. News & World Report was Philadelphia.
