According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, the New York Jets are interested in hiring Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith for their vacant head coaching post. Smith’s work with Russell Wilson is anticipated to make him a desirable contender for head coach this off-season.
After three seasons, he was fired by the Atlanta Falcons, but the Steelers have helped him improve his standing in the league. Therefore, it is not shocking that the Jets are interested in Smith. Smith does wish to return to coaching, but it is unclear if he will do so in New York or another city.
Smith was first given the position of offensive coordinator in Pittsburgh by the Steelers, but former Jets head coach Robert Saleh wanted him on his staff the previous season. With Wilson playing well, Smith rose back into the public glare whereas Smith faded away in Atlanta due to subpar quarterback play.
Smith declined the offer of the head coaching position at his alma institution, North Carolina, stating that he was not a suitable choice. Insiders, however, think Smith will be a strong contender for head coach this cycle.
After reviving Ryan Tannehill’s career in Tennessee as an offensive coordinator and using Derrick Henry and A.J. Brown as the cornerstones of his offense, he got his first head coaching position.
