Following his first indictment on state counts, the suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO is now facing additional federal accusations of murder and stalking, intensifying the case.

After five days on the run, Luigi Mangione was captured in Pennsylvania and agreed to return to New York to face a state murder charge Thursday at a morning court hearing.

Here’s the most recent:

Color photos of the gunman pointing his gun at the back of the UnitedHealthcare executive just before firing, a phony New Jersey driver’s license, and a widely shared photo of his happy smile taken inside a New York hostel were all included in the federal complaint.

Other photos showed the alleged shooter riding an electric bicycle down a street and walking on a city sidewalk while carrying a backpack. These were taken after the shooting, when he was riding the bicycle without a backpack and later wearing a mask inside a taxi. A full-body photo of Mangione taken after his detention and a photograph of a weapon that officials claim he owned and that was said to be similar to the one used to kill the executive were also included in the complaint.

Luigi Mangione’s helicopter has touched down in lower Manhattan.

He landed and was taken by cops with assault guns and others in FBI-NYPD task force jackets up a pier.

After that, he was loaded into a waiting van and driven to the courthouse.

Mangione faces a federal charge of murder by firearm, which carries the potential for the death penalty.

Whether federal prosecutors will seek such a sentence has not been stated. Mangione faces state charges that carry a possible penalty of life in prison.

Some of the writings in a notebook that prosecutors claim was discovered on Mangione are quoted in the recently released federal complaint. These writings reflect animosity toward the health insurance sector in general and affluent CEOs in particular.

An entry from Aug. 15 said the target is insurance because it checks every box, according to the filing, while an Oct. 22 entry describes an intent to wack the CEO of one of the insurance companies at its investor conference.

This investor conference is a true windfall … and most importantly the message becomes self evident, the notebook entry read, according to the complaint.

Luigi Mangione agreed to return to New York to face a state murder charge Thursday at a morning court appearance in Pennsylvania where he was arrested last week after five days on the run. It was unclear when he would be in court on the federal charges.

Following the hearing in Pennsylvania, the Blair County district attorney told reporters, “We definitely believe it’s in the interests of justice to turn him over to the New York City police department and Manhattan district attorney’s office, which we did,” given the defendant’s reversal today and decision to waive both his preliminary hearing and his extradition. He is now in their custody. He will go forth with New York to await trial or prosecution for his homicide and related charges in New York. When the defendant is available for prosecution in Blair County, we plan to essentially reexamine the case and keep it open.
