After two consecutive 3-19 seasons, the West Perry Mustang boys basketball team will have a wealth of experience going into the 2024 Mid-Penn Colonial League season.

With a team primarily made up of sophomores (7) and seniors (4), head coach Tom Smeigh will have all five of his starters returning. The head coach for the 12th year clarified that our experience should be our strength. Everybody is aware of their role. The entire team is looking forward to the season. We also had a hectic summer. According to Smeigh, several players participated in a basketball camp, the county summer league, and a few tournaments so they wouldn’t be coming into the season rusty but prepared to compete.

Being the smallest team on the court is the one thing that appears to be a constant in West Perry basketball. As usual, the varsity coach joked that our size is our vulnerability.

Casey Sutch and Hayden Fleisher were the first two rookies the Mustangs began last season. Sutch set a record for points and three-point plays by a freshman and led the team in scoring. After establishing himself as a starter, Fleisher and fellow sophomore Jaxson Bower will now take Braedon McKeever’s place at forward. McKeever led or finished second in the majority of team statistical categories in 2023.

Senior shooting guard Micah Weaver, who is the seventh Mustang player since 2000 to have more over 50 three-pointers in his career, and senior point guard Mason Sanno will join McKeever and those three sophomores.

Senior Tyler Sokoloski and two other sophomores, Christian Stump and Aiden Lupfer, are expected to receive a lot of playing time. Freshman Marshall Etter, junior Gage Snyder, and sophomores Ryan McCurdy and Carson Fritz complete the team.

After playing Juniata on December 3, West Perry will compete in the Tulpehocken Tip-Off Tournament from December 6–7. Smeigh said he is very excited for the yearly PECO boys event at Susquenita on December 28.
