Pittsburgh –Against the Cincinnati Bengals, the Pittsburgh Steelers switched up their slot cornerback snaps. Cam Sutton surpassed Beanie Bishop by a significant margin for the first time this season. Bishop entered during the team’s dime packages and played a season-low six snaps.
Given that Bishop has been playing good football these past few weeks, why was the trade made? The Steelers wanted a seasoned presence like Sutton back there because they were going to run a lot of different coverages against Joe Burrow, head coach Mike Tomlin stated.
“Just the intricacies of their offensive strategy and the reality that Joe Burrow was on the other side.” Given some of the difficulties with the way they shift people about, I believed that having a more seasoned man in our sub package would help us not only with concept recognition but also with communication. Beanie [Bishop] continued to play in the game, and we are happy with his contributions thus far. He will play a significant role in our work. However, we split the work and effort to win that game every week, which is why we were thrilled to have Cam return,” Tomlin stated.
Bishop will still receive the majority of snaps this week despite this. Actually, according to the depth chart, Bishop is the starting slot cornerback. Sutton, meanwhile, has alternated between the safety, dimebacker, and slot in various weeks. Instead of a fixed depth chart, all of this works together to provide a situation that changes from week to week.
In recent weeks, Bishop has improved, stepping up his game and settling in as a rookie later in the season. If the Steelers want their secondary to get better, they will need him to keep playing well.
