Around the jetty at Barnegat Lighthouse State Park, sand from a $1.86 million dredging and beach replenishment project crumbled, leaving huge holes in the beach and requiring officials to block off a section of the area.
According to a statement from Stephen Schapiro, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation, the dredged sand was placed around the jetty as part of a navigation and beach replenishment project for Barnegat Light.
