According to court documents acquired Monday, a man who didn’t know how to put up grow lights ended up setting his house on fire last week.

According to a probable cause affidavit against him, 27-year-old Tyler Scott Snyder said police he had begun growing marijuana in his basement a few months prior but had never connected growing equipment previously. It turns out that the negligent way all of the equipment was connected and functioning resulted in an electrical fire, which notified the authorities of his expanding enterprise and caused damage to his house, forcing six residents to leave.

At around 4:40 a.m., Northern York County Regional police arrived at the 100 block of North Alpine Drive in Jackson Township. Firefighters found flames in the basement after first spotting smoke outside the house.

According to the statement of probable cause, investigators discovered loose marijuana and packaging, two burnt UV lamps, six marijuana plants and eight smaller starter plants that were destroyed by the fire and fire suppression attempts, and more after extinguishing the fire.

According to investigators, Snyder admitted to not knowing what he was doing and that he had never connected up any growing equipment.

According to authorities, he said that the marijuana was for his own personal use and that no one else in the house was involved in the plant cultivation.

According to the authorities, there were two children and four adults inside the house when the fire started.

According to online court documents, Snyder faces six misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment, two felony counts of endangering the welfare of children, and criminal possession with intent to deliver.
