According to Kevin Coit, he began cutting his forearms with a staple from a piece of legal mail because he was so plagued by voices in his head. At the State Correctional facility in Smithfield, Huntingdon County, he then had the opportunity to ask for assistance from staff members who were walking by his cell.
However, Coit told a federal jury in Harrisburg on Monday that the correctional officer who was examining his wounds from outside his cell door mockingly challenged him, preventing him from receiving the assistance he required.
