Dallas According to a report acquired by The Dallas Morning News, a man arrested in White Settlement last week after police found firearms, ammunition, and homemade explosives in his van informed them he was preparing an attack on a nearby church.
According to the fire department report received through an open records request on Monday, the Fort Worth Fire Department bomb squad arrived early on November 26th to retrieve the explosives.
The report did not identify the man or specify which church he said authorities he intended to target.
White Settlement police officers were dispatched to the 9200 block of Jason Drive earlier that morning after a neighbor called to report a suspicious car parked on the residential street.
According to the report, the bomb squad concluded that three of the eight explosives found in the van’s rear were destructive. Ammunition and firearms were also found inside the van.
On Monday, it was unclear what accusations the man may face. The man’s identity has not been made public by authorities. White Settlement police detective Cpl. Laura Gonzalez told The News via email on Wednesday that the man had been taken into custody and that charges were on the way. She did not specify the charges he would be subject to.
On Monday, Gonzalez did not immediately answer questions. A representative for the FBI referred a question to the police. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives spokesman, Sara Abel, stated that the agency is collaborating with state and federal authorities to pursue the fullest possible prosecution but did not offer any other details.
Abel said in a statement on Monday that ATF and its partners take all threats of violence seriously and will maintain acting quickly to keep our streets’ residents safe.
According to a news release, White Settlement police officers discovered the man in the van’s driver’s seat with a weapon on his lap when they arrived on the scene at around 5:30 a.m. on November 26. While chatting with him, authorities took the man out of the van because he was having mental health problems.
Gonzalez claimed last week that two long firearms, including an assault-style rifle, and a handgun were taken from the van by authorities. According to the fire department report, the van also contained ammunition.
The fire department report’s brief account is the first time the man’s suspected intents have been made public. White Settlement police, with assistance from federal law enforcement agencies, conducted an investigation into the man’s intentions.
