Lewandowski also spoke about his unusual defensive role against Argentina and added, “This is very rare, yes: Me in the defensive midfield. But I knew I had to help the team.”

The Argentina – Poland match in Group C of the FIFA World Cup 2022 was important for both teams. Argentina had to win to qualify for the next round, and Poland needed to maintain a healthy goal difference to do the same.

Despite a high-stress game, Poland’s star forward Robert Lewandowski attacked Lionel Messi twice. This led to the referee whistling for foul play.

As Argentina lead 2-0, Lewandowski made a desperate failed attempt to try an in-game handshake with the former Barcelona striker.

Though Messi did not look happy and the Argentinian completely ignored Lewandowski, La Albiceleste ultimately won the match and finished at the top of their group. They will advance to the next stage.

Despite their defeat to Senegal, Poland managed to make it through to the first knockout round of 16 in Group H. They came just in front of finalist Mexico who lost to Sweden.

Messi and Lewandowski traded a few words following their match and embraced each other.

Lewandowski won the 2021 Best Men’s Player award back in January of last year. After losing out to Messi who received a record-breaking seventh Ballon d’Or, Lewandowski came back this year to win Best Best Player in a three-way tie.

It seemed like this sparked a cold war between two talismanic strikers, as the Poland marksman was favored to win the Ballon d’Or that year.

Fans speculated about what the two stars talked about after their hard-fought match, as they are famously rivals.

Lewandowski, who plays for Bayern Munich in Germany, said what he told the striker after their group clash.

The 34-year-old said, “We had a little chat, and we were just having fun. I told Messi that I played more defensively than usual, but sometimes a player needs to do what’s best for the team.”

Lewandowski had an unusual defensive role against Argentina, and added, “This is very rare–yes: me playing in the midfield. But I knew I needed to help the team.”

Poland will play France next in the round of 16 on December 4th.

Lewandowski has not had many opportunities to shoot, and he hasn’t been able to find the ball against Argentina. He needs to make sure he’s at the top of his game if he wants to win on Sunday.
