Iron Maiden quickly found someone to take Nicko McBrain’s place as their longstanding drummer.
According to Loudwire, Simon Dawson was named as McBrain’s replacement just days after he announced his retirement. McBrain was a member of the band for forty-two years.
A relationship exists. Dawson performs with Steve Harris’s second band, British Lion, which is fronted by Iron Maiden.

Iron Maiden is thrilled to announce that many of our fans will recognize them as they take the stage for the 2025 tour, which will wrap off with 81 performances for over 1.4 million people from Ljubljana to the Coachella Valley and from Western Australia to Sao Paulo. According to the statement, Steve has worked with British Lion’s rhythm unit for the past 12 years with Simon Dawson, a former session drummer. Simon, who is originally from Suffolk, England, linked up with Steve Harris in 2012. In addition to the several tours that followed in the US, UK, Europe, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and most recently, Mexico and South America, he made his debut on three tracks on the first British Lion album and all of the second critically praised The Burning. Iron Maiden’s Run for Your Lives tour, which begins in Budapest on May 27, will commemorate their 50th anniversary the following year.
On the band’s website, McBrain, 72, recently declared his retirement.
After just four months off following a stroke in January 2023, the drummer rejoined the band on the tour.
However, McBrain is retiring because even the hardest men need to step back and rest from time to time.
On the band’s website, he stated, “After much thought, it is with both sorrow and joy, I announce my decision to take a step back from the grind of the extensive touring lifestyle.” My last performance with Iron Maiden will be in Sao Paulo today, Saturday, December 7. I hope the band continues to have success.
According to Loudwire, McBrain joined Iron Maiden in 1982 after making his debut on the group’s Piece of Mind album.
According to the website, McBrain claimed that when he went out on stage, he was still recovering from his stroke and that his bandmates had modified their set lists to account for his incapacity to perform some of the more difficult songs.
McBrain pledged to stay firmly a member of the Iron Maiden family, according to Loudwire.
“The past forty-two years of touring with Maiden has been an amazing journey,” he wrote. You made it a reality, my comrades, and I adore you! I am excited and full of hope as I look to the future! God bless you everybody, I’ll see you soon, and of course, up the irons!
