Washington (AP) As part of official funeral ceremonies, President Jimmy Carter’s remains arrived in Washington one day earlier, and he will continue to lie in state on Wednesday.

At the age of 100, the 39th president and Democrat from Georgia passed away on December 29.

Carter, who was elected as an outsider in the wake of Watergate and the Vietnam War, was president from 1977 to 1981. He lost to Republican Ronald Reagan after a difficult four years filled with global problems and economic turmoil. He did, however, live long enough to witness historians view his presidency more favorably than did voters in 1980.

Beyond his political achievements, he was honored Tuesday at the Capitol for his decades of humanitarian activity, his strong religious convictions, and his lengthy public service.

Speaker Mike Johnson and Vice President Kamala Harris were among those who paid their respects to Carter at the Capitol Rotunda, where his flag-draped casket is still on top of the Lincoln catafalque for the public to view.

Until Thursday morning, when he is taken to the Washington National Cathedral for a state funeral, Carter will stay at the Capitol. Longtime Carter ally President Joe Biden will give a eulogy. President-elect Donald Trump is among the other current past presidents who are anticipated to attend.

Following the funeral, Carter and his family will be transported back to Georgia in the Boeing 747, which serves as Air Force One when a sitting president is on board. Carter taught Sunday School at Maranatha Baptist Church in Little Plains for decades after leaving office, and the church will have an invitation-only burial.

Except for four years in the Georgia Governor’s Mansion and four years in the White House, Carter will be buried next to his wife, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, at a spot close to the house they bought before his first state Senate campaign in 1962.
