Blockbuster, a retail classic from the 1990s, may be making a comeback, but not in the way you might think.

The BlockBuster trademark owner is considering starting new businesses. An Instagram post suggests that Blockbuster might reappear as a restaurant, amusement park, or nightclub.

The owner’s wishes are detailed in a November 2023 file from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, which validates the rumors.

According to the filing’s Goods/Services section, the brand wants to trademark nightclubs, amusement parks, and entertainment services that are similar to amusement park attractions. It goes on to describe a desire for snack bar, restaurant, and bar services.

In the future, a movie and supper might be mixed, although it’s uncertain if these eateries and other businesses would offer video rentals, which used to be the main source of revenue for the retail chain.

Taste of Country claims that this is not the first time the company has attempted to reach a wider audience. Blockbuster debuted Block Party, an adult-only indoor theme park with a motion simulator ride and a high-tech maze, in the 1990s. Under the direction of former Disney executives Bill Burns and Fred Brooks, the park was tested in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Indianapolis, Indiana.

Blockbuster closed its corporately owned locations in 2014 after declaring bankruptcy in 2010. Debbie and Ken Tisher own the final Blockbuster, which is located in Bend, Oregon.
