There was evident conflict between quarterback Russell Wilson and Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, according to several reports. Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has now disclosed the reason behind that conflict.

Wilson’s ability to shift route stems and be audible at the line was taken away by Smith, according to Dulac. That led to conflict between Smith and Wilson and fundamentally altered the offensive strategy.

Several reports claim that Smith did not want Wilson to stray from the game plan and alter plays at the line of scrimmage, as he did in Cincinnati. Smith’s run-first approach and Wilson’s desire to attack with the pass and throw down the field caused conceptual friction, according to Dulac.

The Steelers may have been sufficiently confident in Wilson’s ability to become the team’s starter, at least for the upcoming season, after his 12 games as a starter. The coaching staff does, however, feel that they would want Justin Fields to return. One of the main causes can be the conflict between Smith and Wilson.
