Five of the six games the Washington Capitals are currently playing are at home.

They will play the Sabres away from home on Monday night, January 6, at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo. The NHL Network will broadcast the game, which is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. ET. ESPN+, Fubo TV (add-on, free trial), Sling TV (add-on, discount), and DirecTV Stream (add-on, free trial, and discount) all offer live streaming.

With a 13-6-0 record this season, Washington (26-10-3, in the Metropolitan Division) is dominating on the road. After the Capitals defeated the New York Rangers 7–4 on Saturday, Alex Ovechkin scored his 872nd goal in his career, putting him 23 goals shy from tying Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record.

In addition, Jonathan Quick, who still has 399 career victories, was defeated by Dylan Strome, Lars Eller, Andrew Mangiapane, Connor McMichael, and Aliaksei Protas. With 37.5 seconds remaining, Tom Wilson clinched it with an empty-netter, and Logan Thompson made 28 saves to make up for allowing Chris Kreider to score a goal into a wide-open net.

Since returning from missing the previous 16 due to a broken left leg, Ovechkin has scored four goals in five games. With 19 goals so far this season, the 39-year-old is on track to surpass Gretzky’s record of 894 this spring.

Ovechkin needs just one more goal to accomplish 20 goals in each of his 20 league seasons. The Gretzky chase was put on hold due to a broken left fibula, but the 39-year-old has returned with a bang.

To tell the truth, I think every game has greater skating touches,” Ovechkin remarked. I’ll accept it.
