With a 41-21 victory over No. 1 seed Oregon in Wednesday’s quarterfinal round, Ohio State delivered its second consecutive strong playoff performance and exacted revenge for one of its two regular-season defeats. With quarterback Will Howard throwing for 319 yards and three touchdowns and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith having a fantastic day with seven catches for 187 yards and two scores in the victory, the Buckeyes’ offense operated with efficiency and explosiveness. While Oregon’s rushing assault finished with minus-23 yards on 28 carries, running backs TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins combined for 179 yards on 25 carries.

In their quarterfinal matchup with No. 4 seed Arizona State, the Longhorns were unable to cruise. The game went into two overtimes until Texas delivered the decisive punch with a 25-yard scoring throw from Quinn Ewers to Gunnar Helm on the Longhorns’ first offensive play. After Ewers hit Matthew Golden for a 28-yard touchdown to force the second overtime, the Longhorns, who finished second in the SEC behind Georgia, faced a 4th-and-13 in the first overtime. With fewer than seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Texas was ahead 24–8, but the Sun Devils struggled back into the game with two touchdowns in 91 seconds.
