Constructed in 1926, this limestone palace is located in Harrisburg on the banks of the Susquehanna River.
The Manor on Front, Bed & Breakfast, located in the 2900 block of North Front Street, consists of two properties, including the Georgian-style Mary Sachs mansion and the Ledgestone mansion next door.
Last week, the Ledgestone home was highlighted in Cool Spaces:Cool Spaces in a historic, unique residence on Front Street
When former owner Mary Knackstedt suggested constructing a new development on the property, the structures were spared demolition. However, as the luxury condominiums’ plans advanced, locals united against the idea and sparked preservation initiatives.
The properties were abandoned to deteriorate for over ten years. Integral Construction’s Mike Wilson and his wife Sally Wilson paid $500,000 for the residences in 2014.
The Manor on Front was purchased by Sheri and Mark Bennington in 2022 and is now used as a bed & breakfast.
Although the mansion may easily be converted into a residence, the Mary Sachs is currently run as a bed & breakfast.
Ira P. Romberger, a stationery businessman from Harrisburg, had the house constructed for him in 1926. In 1935, the house was occupied by Mary Sachs.
Sachs ran a department shop for women’s fashion at 208 N. Third St. in Harrisburg. She also had stores in Reading and Lancaster. Under the direction of Eleanor Le Maire, an interior architect in New York City, Sachs completely renovated the house’s interior.
The Architectural Record’s March 1938 issue featured pictures of the house’s art deco interiors. Eleanor Roosevelt was among the numerous well-known visitors who frequented the house.
The Historic Harrisburg Association’s Jeb Stuart recalled the era of clothier and philanthropist Mary Sachs, popularly known as the Merchant Princess of Pennsylvania, when the home opened in November 2021. The house was purchased in 1935 by Mary Sachs, who died in 1960. The house then served as an attorney’s office before being abandoned for over ten years.
Since then, the 7,000-square-foot property has undergone restorations to maintain its historic charm and character while providing contemporary conveniences.
Four bedrooms with en suite bathrooms are located on the first level. Two further bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms are located on the second floor.
The second level also features a living room with a fireplace and a separate entrance, a dining room with a skylight, and a sizable, contemporary kitchen.
The Mary Sachs suites are named after well-known female fashion designers who had an impact on the goods and stock Sachs chose to stock in her establishments.
A bathroom has been roughed in on the third level, which is completely empty. In addition to a communal area, there are four additional potential bedrooms.
Numerous windows let in plenty of natural light and provide views of the Susquehanna River and Riverfront Park, which is across the street from the house. The property is situated above the flood plain and spans.48 acres.
An owner’s suite, also known as in-law quarters, is located on the first floor of the house and includes a bedroom, kitchen, living area, and complete bathroom.
The first level of the detached garage, often known as a carriage house, is ready for parking or storage, and the second floor may be another source of income. The utilities have already been built, and a sizable studio area with a bathroom has been roughed in.
The house, which is located at 2917 North Front Street in Harrisburg, is listed by Howard Hanna Real Estate Services agents Lisa Werner and Christine Farrell for $1,400,000.
