ESPN’s Brooke Pryor reports that Karl Dunbar, the defensive line coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, will be a free agent this offseason. The team may decide to bring Dunbar back once his contract expires, but that is not a given.
Dunbar joined the Steelers in 2018 after being selected from Alabama’s staff by Nick Saban. Dunbar has worked with the outside linebackers in addition to the defensive line throughout his time in Pittsburgh.
Cam Heyward and T.J. Watt rose to prominence during that period. In the end, Javon Hargrave became a highly sought-after free agent. In the meanwhile, he has produced Keeanu Benton, Nick Herbig, and Alex Highsmith. Dunbar has a strong resume that has consistently performed well for the Steelers, and it would make sense to keep him around given the anticipated high draft investment that will be made at that position this offseason.
In any event, the Steelers have not made any announcements on staff changes, but given that contracts are expiring and the hiring cycle has begun, those changes are probably in the works.
