An amendment to the US Constitution that would permit President Donald Trump and all subsequent presidents to run for reelection for a third term was introduced Thursday by a Republican congressman from Tennessee.
Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) offered the amendment, which stated the following:
Nobody can be elected president more than three times, or elected to a third term after being elected to two terms in a row. Additionally, no one who has served as president or held the office for more than two years of a term in which another person was elected president can be elected president more than twice.
In a news release, Ogles defended the proposed amendment, stating that Trump has shown himself to be the only person in contemporary history who can turn around our country’s decline and bring it back to its former glory and that he should be allowed the time he needs to do it.
The statement went on to say: We must provide President Trump all the tools he needs to reverse the destructive direction set by the Biden administration. President Trump has repeatedly demonstrated his unwavering devotion to the American people and our wonderful country. As states and lawmakers, we must do everything we can to support him in his efforts to save our nation and restore the republic.
Born in Tennessee, 53-year-old Ogles is in his second term in the House of Representatives.
He was one of the Republican stalwarts in Kevin McCarthy’s protracted bid for speakership in January 2023, voting against him eleven times before finally endorsing him. Ogles voted against the removal of McCarthy in October.
The Constitution’s 22nd Amendment forbids a candidate from seeking reelection to the presidency three times. The ratification date was February 27, 1951.
Franklin D. Roosevelt, who presided over the country from 1933 until his death in 1945, was the last president to serve more than two terms.
