NBC News was not given any additional details regarding the location or time of the funeral for the executive who was shot outside a Hilton hotel in Midtown New York on Wednesday.

His shooting sparked a major manhunt that may have come to an end on Monday when Luigi Mangione was questioned by police in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

A McDonald’s employee alerted the police because she believed the 26-year-old person of interest looked like the common images that were plastered on TV and online.

The shooter is thought to have been driven by a dislike of the methods of the insurance sector. According to police, bullets bearing the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose” inscribed on their shells were among the evidence found at the crime site.

After 17 years with the insurance giant, Thompson was appointed CEO of UnitedHealthcare in 2021. His success with the insurance company was attributed to his experience, connections, and values in a statement announcing the promotion.

Despite earning over $10 million in 2023, Thompson had a reputation for maintaining a quiet profile. Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota denounced his shooting, calling it surprising and horrific.

His passing, according to Governor Tim Walz, was a blow to the community. He wrote on the internet, “This is terrible news and a terrible loss for the business and health care community in Minnesota.”

In a statement, UnitedHealthcare called Thompson a friend to his coworkers and expressed its sorrow and sadness at the news of its leader’s passing.
