Byron Leftwich, the former quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, has been interviewed by head coaches for the first time this cycle. After firing Jerod Mayo after just one season, the New England Patriots will interview Leftwich for the post as head coach.
Owner Robert Kraft claimed he hated how Mayo was put up when he took the position, and Mayo guided the team to a mere 4-13 record. Despite being Bill Belichick’s hand-picked replacement, he failed miserably in his first season in charge.
Leftwich, however, hasn’t played football or coached in two years. Under Tom Brady’s leadership, he led the Bucs to a Super Bowl victory, but in 2022, his last season as offensive coordinator, they lost to one of the weakest teams in the NFL.
After being thrown out of a position he had held for four seasons, Leftwich was a hot candidate to be the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021.
He returned to Tampa Bay instead, and things took a turn for the worst. Being a head coach would entail much more than Leftwich’s declaration last week that he wanted to get back into coaching and find a position on a staff. A team with a rookie quarterback like Drake Maye would find Leftwich’s offensive experience intriguing. The Patriots have begun casting a wide net.
