BANGKOK (AP) — Due to a power issue that may cause vehicles to stop suddenly or not start, Ford Motor Company is recalling 272,827 Broncos and Mavericks.

The issue is with a 12 volt battery manufactured by Camel Battery of China that has inherent manufacturing flaws, such as weld failures that can result in open circuits, according to information from the National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration.

It stated that no accidents, fires, or injuries resulting from the issue had been reported.

Between February 2021 and October 2023, Ford produced the cars before discontinuing the use of those particular batteries. It is estimated that just 1% of the cars with the batteries have the flaws.

Following a U.S. government penalties for moving too slowly on an earlier recall, Ford promised in November to examine and improve its recall decision-making process and subject to monitoring by an impartial third party that will oversee its recall performance for three years.

Following a prior recall of 2021–2023 Ford Bronco Sport SUVs and 2022–2023 Ford Maverick trucks, the NHTSA reported that certain vehicles experienced unexpected power outages, including the inability to activate their hazard lights. According to the report, the solution entails software upgrades to enhance battery problem detection and alert drivers.
