The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a safety alert about supplements that include deadly yellow oleander, and two additional items have been added.
The FDA now has 25 items on its list of harmful supplements after the addition of New Me and VidaSlim on December 3.
The tejocote root, also referred to as Brazil seed, raiz de tejocote, Mexican hawthorn, and Crataegus Mexicana, which has been used in traditional medicine for inflammation, weight loss, and digestion, was included in the supplements that were offered for sale online.
The supplements contained yellow oleander (Thevetia peruviana), a poisonous plant endemic to Mexico and Central America that can be lethal if consumed, according to FDA testing.
Additionally, yellow oleander can lead to serious health issues with the heart, brain, nerves, blood vessels, and digestive system.
The FDA evaluated up to 18 samples as of January 26, 2024, and discovered that they included yellow oleander. The FDA’s notice contains the list of supplements.
There has been one significant event with Green ELV Nutrition’s ELV Control Herbal Supplement Capsules, and the FDA has received complaints of people becoming sick after consuming the supplements mentioned in the safety alert.
Ten products have been recalled by the relevant brands or vendors as a result of the FDA’s safety advisory. Other businesses, however, either refused to recall their goods or the FDA was unable to get in touch with them.
The agency is worried that items with hazardous yellow oleander are still available on the market, according to the safety advisory.
The third-party platforms that sell these products are collaborating with the FDA.
Customers who have bought the recalled supplements indicated below that contain hazardous yellow oleander are being advised by the FDA to discontinue use and discard them.
Get in touch with your doctor right away if you’ve taken the supplements, and even if you haven’t used them recently, make sure to let them know which one you used.
You can also get in touch with the state poison control center with additional inquiries.
Go to Industry and Consumer Assistance to file a complaint or report an adverse event (disease or severe allergic reaction).
